Synesthesia: Seeing the World Differently

Abstract : In this paper I examine the processes and outcomes of using synesthesia in art. I discuss what might be different about artists with synesthesia and look at some types of experiences that synesthetes may have. I explore Heinrich Klüver’s Form Constants that can be found in the artworks of synesthetic artists. While Klüver discovered that synesthetes see things in common, I observe how they can be used in painting and also show what some common forms look like in video. Synesthesia shapes and informs one’s aesthetic, as well as contributes to the artistic process, even when one is unaware of one’s shared abilities. Because integrating one’s abilities into one’s work can invite challenges I discuss the impact that the art world can make. I also discuss how knowledge about synesthesia, or the lack of it, contributes to an artist’s work and an audience’s reaction to their artwork. Keywords: synesthesia, synaesthesia, art, painting, colored music, colored sounds, colored touch, colored pain, artistic codes, video

The Language of Synesthesia

ABSTRACT: In "The Language of Synesthesia,” Marcia Smilack tells the story of her life as a fine art photographer who taught herself how to use a camera by relying on her synesthetic responses as signals for when to click the shutter. Photographing reflections on moving water, she created a career in which named herself a Reflectionist and named her images paintings by camera. The responses that tell her to take a picture include sound and texture elicited by what she sees. In detailing her history, she tells of the seminal experience at age six when she struck a piano note for the first time and instantly saw the color green; the musical sound elicited color. Later in her life, she became aware that her synesthesia worked in reverse as well. That is, looking at color and shape elicits sound and texture. She hears with her eyes and sees with her ears. She explains that from the first "green note” of her childhood, a room was carved out in her mind where all subsequent synesthetic experiences are viewed on an internal screen. It is the same room where her eidetic memories are preserved in present time. She lives her life in metaphor and describes the double life created by her synesthesia. That synesthesia is itself a language is obvious to her, which she shows with several examples from her artwork where the symbols of her photographs serve as musical nomenclature. The picture language that her body produces made of colors and shapes provide a natural metaphor to the words that come to her secondarily as a translation of what she sees. She calls her synesthetic picture language her native tongue and shows the relationship between her waking synesthesia and the synesthesia of her dreams, posing the question of whether synesthesia might be a waking form of dreaming.

« The Brain is Wider Than the Sky”

Abstract: "The Brain is Wider Than the Sky” As a diagnostic tool for making the body transparent, fMRI scans are a significant resource in detecting physical maladies. Recent discussions regarding its picturing potential has turned toward using such neuro-imaging for assessing behavioral attributes. While the fMRI is an invaluable tool for science and medicine, its objectivity falls short of denoting and predicting emotional/cognitive spheres driving human behavior. Other tools of evidence regarding this realm of the subjective can be analyzed through language, art or the imagination. This paper compares ways in which the brain is accessed by technological intervention and its neurologically embedded aptitude for metaphor and generating aesthetic artifacts. Each form of representation is neurologically based, but differs significantly in their respective communicative, data and stylistic capabilities.

Abstract: There is a strong relation between neurology and literature.in French culture. Two traditions inherited from the past century persist in the new clothes of neuroculture, that of the empathic narrative of the case and that of the speculative diagnosis. The neuroliterature took different syndromes in neurology to make of them fiction, most often mixed with traditional frames. The novelty is rather in the autobiographical story of the creator who lived a kept secret condition before now, whose description and narration were delegated to a specialist. "The view from inside” is one of the most striking aspects of the new contemporary imagination influenced by neurosciences and neuroculture.

For over forty years, philosophers have struggled with is the issue of how we can get emotionally involved with fictional characters and events. What is the nature of sadness or joy which is not tied to a real personal loss or satisfaction? Empirical evidence suggest that cognitive and/or perceptual involvement with fiction as such is associated with a disengagement or inhibition of the episodic system (either memory of personal events or self-projections into the future) involving limbic structures such as the hippocampus to the benefit of other cerebral areas implicated in semantic processes such as fronto-temporal cortices. Moreover, the episodic system is arguably an essential component of the emotional responses towards real people and events. On that basis, the hypothesis to be assessed at both conceptual and empirical level is that emotional responses towards fictional scenes identified as such are "semantic emotions”, a species of emotions to be distinguished from real-life emotions. "Semantic emotions” are emotional experiences that disengage the episodic system, and are mainly modulated by semantic circuits (whence the terminological choice).

Abstract: The evolutionary human sciences are still in the process of forming a paradigm. Their model of human nature is not yet complete because it has not yet taken adequate account of the experience that forms the subject matter of the humanities. This essay is designed to help correct that deficiency. In the first part of the essay, I explain how scholars in the humanities can help construct the still developing model of human nature. In the second part, I argue that the proper subject of literary commentary is "meaning” and that meaning can be localized in the interaction of perspectives in authors, readers, and characters. In the third part, I argue that the main categories of human life history are also the main themes of fiction. In the final section, I offer suggestions about directions for future research.
